View Full Version : Poll: What kind of game?
Michael Hartlef

Hi folks,
this topic is to collect ideas and vote on these ideas. You will have 4 votes but you can change them and you don't need to use them all. There is no fixed date to finish the poll but we should start working on the game soon. Please write what kind of games you would like to work on and what you would never like to work on. Please post ideas and I will add them to the poll.
EDIT: To the amount of ideas, I set the votes allowed to 4. You have to remove your votes first and then revote.
And here are my ideas so far:
3D space shooter
If someone remembers Wing Commander, that game coudl be aloose guide line. You were part of the crew of a space destroyer and were in a war fighting a cat creatures. During the storyline you could choose between missions and then had to fullfill these via flighting and shooting/bombing the enemy.
space explore/wisim
One of my favorite games of all the time was Masters of Orion. You started on a planet in space, had to colonize it and then build your fleet and explore the solar systems. Of course you were not alone and so had to deal with other species in space. Peacefull or gun blasting wars.
A WipeOut kind of racing game
Controlling your hovering vessel over crazy tracks in a scifi influenced environment isn't something you wanna do when you want to relax. So start the engines and put your foot to the metal!
A turnbased fantasy strategy game
You are the king of a little country and trying desperate that you people are happy and healthy. Raise your kingdom, maybe with the help of a little war.
Chariot racing
Ben Hur was yesterday. Today you race a chariot around in the arena to become the most famous chariot driver of rome. You will see your chariot from behind in a 3rd person view. Train your horses, buy new equipment, sapotage your opponents, let the others eat your dust.
Thanks!

Hi,
very good plans. Only topic I consider tabu for me is fantasy - it is great topic, but there was so many games with this topic in last time I do not want to see orc or elves for a while now :D.
On the other side - I really like legends of my country, they do contain some interesting characters like "night howler", "men on fire", "Wasserman" ( ahem, I feel German origin for some reason :D ), "fext" ( something like zombie, but in form of soldier returned from war, creepy ), ...
3D space shooter seems to me like very easy thing to do now with TBGL - if you remember my 3D concept of topDown with those evil controls... at the time it was lot of OpenGL matrix hack, but now entities make such a job easier.
Those are my first thoughts, the other options are nice as well ( and chariot racing is very original ), I will think of it more.

A Naval RTS
Based on the napoleon naval battles, you control one or more ships and fight the enemy fleet with your vessels. Think of Man-O-War.
Sail race boats
You race your boat against a pack of others. A relaxing game with some strategical influence.
Sand track oval racing
Race your buggy around some sand tracks. Win the DirtyMan trophy and become rookie of the year!
Hi all,
I love game like Wipeout 3D, and 3D Space shooter are really Fun to play and i think it's possible to do with TBGL entity System.
Charriot Racing is an interesting idea ;D.

Mike,
interesting topic that Naval one :)
I still really love game "Sea legends", it had interesting part, where you controlled ship from ~17th century, and could perform "dogfights" on sea, including handling of sails, turning ship, seeking good wind to gain speed and finally choose ammo to shoot from rear, front and back cannons. This was really good fun, with lot of suspense.
Imagine 3D ship, where you run onboard like captain from "wheel" to main board giving orders to shoot, while looking how is your ship destroyed :)

Come on guys, no ideas?

What about...
WWI ( yes, the first one ) dog fight game. I love Fokker Dr.I, Albatros, Sopwith Camel and all those old, fragile airplanes.
It could be fun, I love game "Red Baron", with all that Zeppelin busting and fights at 90 MPH :)
I was on airshow last week, and the "flying circus" was the best part of it.

That's a very good idea Petr. I'll add it. :)

... as I am not a gamer or shooter or a red baron or ben hur or prince of persia - it's not so easy to make good ideas for such a game...
but...
1) I prefer a "racing game" to relax and have fun with it...
"podracing": I like sand car racing (something with driving or flying cars/objects) with a fantastic scifi environment (star wars, episode1, with the young anakin skywalker who has won this podracing competition) or rocky, sandy backgrounds, desert and more...
my second opinion:
2) Fantasy strategy game
A turnbased 'fantasy strategy game'
You are the king of a little country and trying desperate that you people are happy and healthy. Raise your kingdom, maybe with the help of a little war.
I love the figures, the kings and queens, the people with evil and good wizzards and dragons...
otherwise... I can support the "flying circus" too, if you will decide it to this kind of game ;) no problems with this idea...

I think we should let the voting open till Saturday morning. If anyone disagrees, please raise your voice.
Hi all,
maybe we can do a game where is supported 2 players, in addition a Cpu .to do this i thinks it's better a Racing game or Dog fight game

Yes. Single player is mandatory but also a multiplayer mode would be great.
As it seems that most people here like racing, the charriot thingy made you guys curios and also SciFi is something you guys like I came up with this idea. It is a scifi glider racing thing, with a little chariot racing in my mind. The problem with the a real chariot race would be animation of the horses. TBGL doesn't support animations that easily right now. So something that doesn't need complex animation would suit it better I think. So here it is...
Citius, altius, fortius <= Hφher, schneller, stδrker means higher, faster, stronger
Its Rome, 2047 AD. The games are back. To fight crimes and distract the people from their boring lives the emperor decided to bring back the old racing games from the ashes of his ancestors.
But this time you wont race with chariots and 4 horses in front of them. Your vessels are nuclear power driven gliders, that are fast as hell but difficult to control. Become the champion of the new age and collect fame, honour and a little pocket money. But you have to start small. Race you way up in the hall of fame through tide Colloseum tracks, wide desert chasing and on roller coaster like tracks where you should not have been eating before.
You can race clean and respectfull, but sometimes you need to play dirty and send your opponent into the next laser barrier. Only one can win, and that should be YOU!
So imagine fast wipeout like gliders on tracks that could reassemble a Roman culture but in a future setting. You will start small on vessels that are slower and on arena tracks but can advance to allmost not controllable monster machines, that chase each other in big huge desert tracks or on crazy mind whirling roller coaster tracks ala WipeOut.
The POD idea would be awesome too. but I'm not sure if it would conflict with patents/copyright.

so far as I know every registrated thinbasic user can vote here? time is good to think about it... I have the chance to remove my vote??? (I see it some seconds before)...
- @simone: good idea with "supported 2 players", support this one... Racing game would be my favorite ;)

Yes, we can decide to leave the voting open till sunday night. You should able to remove your votes and revote but now I don't see that option anymore. I wrote to eros allready, maybe he changed a setting, when he added Kent to the thinStudio group. I think only thinStudio members can see this forum and so vote on it. We have a logo allready but if the others would like a new one then we could have a go at it.

Hi Mike,
nice idea. While I think it is possible to animate horse now, I think your idea of Rome reloaded is very good too, and easier to code.
I would like to make those racers interesting to watch - with lot of flaps opening closing, rotating motors.
I will write more on this later, must go now.

Can't wait to hear your ideas and I can allready see the particles fly around the screen. I know that you love particles. Ahh, that reminds me of a code request, that I think can be generic too! ;)
Petr Schreiber
18-09-2008, 15:03
Ahhh particles,
those are the elemental effect for this game. Dusty clouds will be there :)
What follows can be understood as unnecessary complication of Mikes idea of race, so please use hammer on me in case you feel it like that :)
Mike's crystall ball is right about rebirth of Roman empire, maybe I would put it a 3 - 4 centuries later, as 2047 is around corner :D
The reborn roman empire was prospering well, but something went wrong so the empire went on the "dark side", decadency is back - the races are took in dangerous area, where poor citizens suffer and rich just laugh and care only about wine, women and ( evil! )singing :D
Imagine in those times citizens of Pompeys have again trouble with lava. The area of New Pompeyes could be the area of race ( dramatic setting, chaos, lava ... ).
You enter in the races as young racer, and can decide how to behave in <number> of races:
Dark path:
- sabotage, violent racing, ignoring confused citizens running across the city.
Bright path
- honest racing, based on good knowledge of the track and acrobatics rather than cheating and crashing your oponents.
Each track ( but all in one city of Pompeyes and its nearest environs ) would have one "emotion moment", in which you must decide whether to help citizen in trouble ( just by pressing button and taking him aboard ) or run them over to amuse spectators of the show.
In the end game would tell you how much evil / good you were, of course the main target is to be the first.
Maybe it is too crazy, to "serious" ( idea of suffering citizens :D ), let me know.

@ hi michael:)
thank you for the logo (please take attention for the new topic I have made some minutes before to start the search for a thinStudio logo... must laugh..) of thinStudio, I didn't know it, was logged out some hours...
@ hi eros:) it's ok, it would be too much work to answer all the mails... but my idea was to make it open for all active users here in order to make them curious about the contest and good advertising for thinbasic can help to get more users perhaps to this forum...
but it doesn't matter, it's ok... =>voting only for thinStudio members! ;)
beside that... we need a logo for the game too... the 'rome impire game idea' is a very good idea, I like it! more input will come when I am healthy again... I haven't read all the messages here... overflow it just...

Hi folks,
@Lionheart: Nothing is decided about making this open to the community. 2 people (you and Eros) are for open it, I don't like the idea. So the majority is for opening it up. We should hear what the others think about it.
@Petr: Very nice idea. But the thing with picking up the citizens would take away the racing element. Would like to hear what the others think about it.
Petr Schreiber
18-09-2008, 18:13
Sure,
I did not meant to race-stop vehicle to let go guy in-continue racing, I was thinking of something like pressing right button at full speed to catch the Pompeyan using some force beam. But I admit it is not very traditional, it was just an idea how to make the gameplay a bit more rich for people with fast reflexes.
Regarding opening ... I am not sure about this, I think people who join take the vote more seriously and with "am I able to help with such a game?" in mind. Who knows...

About the voting, I agree with Mike on this. Since the team is working on it, they should vote on what they work on.
I really enjoyed reading all your guys great ideas for games. I have been in a creative slump for sometime now and so
it was great to read the creative ideas you guys came up with. As I read all the ideas all sorts of images came to my mind's eye.
It will be tough voting on a preference, but am glad there are 4 votes allowed.

Here is a little brain storming about the elements of a possible WW1 game. You see just content wise it is quite job to do but I think could be done in time. The nice thing about it is that you can get a lot of historical info from the net. Also for us media guys there are a lot of blue prints that can help during the modeling phase.

Lionheart008, Vue is a very nice application for rendering images and movies but for creating game model content I think it's stuff is way to much regarding the polycount. But I might be wrong and it can create lowpoly stuff. The other thing is what kind of export functionalities does VUE support?
My favorite workflow right now is
1) Modeling in Hexagon
2) Create the UvMapping in Ultimate Unwrap 3D and export it to the OBJ file format
3) Draw a texture in Photoshop
4) Import into Blender and export it to the M15 fileformat.
Generally we should think about 1000-2000 faces for a player model (better 1000) and lower for environment models. You can create a lot of detail with textures. Terrain might be a different thing, I didn't experiment with this. I think Petr and Kent did some tests with it so they can say more about it.
Lionheart008
19-09-2008, 16:07
hi michael:)
hi all...
... never worked with blender, I am sorry... and the same thing with Hexagon... Vue is perhaps not the right 3d landscape generator... for creating game environment, the polygon amount is really high leveled... and my skills with silo 3d aren't high enough to create models, not yet... other side perhaps I can build some backgrounds with cinema 4d ;)
... ciao and it doesn't matter... see you, Lionheart
ps.. two pictures of vue I added here...
pps: I would like build some models or backgrounds with cinema 4d, I have a tree generator and hair module included, there are many export functions that cinema 4d has :-) !

Hi guys,
on my PC - Sempron 3400+ / 1GB RAM / GeForce 6150LE I can get about 200,000 polygons using model ( dynamic ) rendering at 25FPS. With display lists it is much more. And it is onboard graphic card, I like it.
The thing is in my experience computers with devil Intel graphics inside often do not manage more than 30,000 ( model, dynamic ) polygons per scene.
Petr

Don't worry, I know that it is round. It was just a quick made and I will would make it round once we deside to make a WW1 game. And thanks for the link. That is a nice picture of the EIII.
If WW1 is picked would it be trying to be realistic or some elements of fantasy/Sci-fi allowed also?
I was thinking strange flying machines, air ships but have that late 1800's to early 1900's look.
Hi folks,

Michael
Mike you are good and fast. I have yet to master using image planes for a reference. It is motivating to see your work. I will wait till a game type is decided before I get back into modeling. I forgot so much in Blender it is not funny. I was tying to help Petr a while back with a model and failed miserably. Luckily he did a great job and came up with something really nice.

No way Kent, you paint it too black :)
The idea with sci-fi seems more fitting to "Citius, altius, fortius", which is challenge where we would have to design future!
With real models WW1 we can save some time by having the models "defined" by blueprints, so we can spend more time on gameplay.

Just for fun,
here comes little airplanes demo, as I had models for it first.
You control roll and pitch of blue airplane, mad pilot in red airplane will try to get you ( follow you ) sooner or later.
Make sure you do not fly out of screen, camera AI ... and lot of other stuff not implemented :)
If you are not sure how to control, just hold down arrow from the beginning to go looping, and wait for the red oponent. Once he appears, try to experiment like pressing other keys :)
It is just concept, AI is not the best ever seen in the game.
Petr
Petr, that is a fun game already. It could be a remote control airplane game.
Mike your models are always so good and with nice low polycount. Thanks for the screenshots!

Thanks Mike, but I think my second design looks more like the viper. I really have to stretch my mind to find the first one looking like it is based on the cyclon raider. :) But hey. They (BSG) are great designs and so they influence a lot of people. I didn't had these in my mind. I was looking at some wipeout sites before. They have very slim looking vessels and very powerfull looking ones. That influenced the design of these both.

@Abraxas - how this spectrum game was played? About 5 years ago I did game with glider. There was a map with high houses you had to avoid, and few places where wind blowed up ( in other areas you were falling down slowly ). The target was to not drop down on the ground. Do you have something similar in mind for the paper models?
@Eros - I will add the FPS view, just will have to add some temporary environment for better orientation :)

Hi all,
@Mike: Very nice model :o
@Petr: Very fun game and simple to check ;)
Thanks,

hi all:)
@ hi dear michael (they are very nice your first flying models!), hi petr...
@eros, simone, kent, abraxas and other engaged guys here...
my short input:
- I have tried some minutes before, very fast!, to build a little "ufo" (with "cinema"), but I have still to find the right export file to load it into other 3d apps... or is it important, if I can do texture my models with cinema 4d too? My c4d file has only a size of "55 kbyte" !
I add here four pictures, with textures and without, naked:)
- otherwise I like to build some ufos or aeroplanes with silo3d ;)
- more will come if you like it... but it's just a time problem for me this day...
=> what is the 'max. size' format for objects should include in our game???
have a nice day,
bye, Lionheart
good luck to all here for creating new flying models;)

@petr: Great little game! with the fokker hunter and preyer! ;D, easy to play!
- do you have a collision detection built in or such things will come the next time?
I like it... wow! :D

@ hi dear michael (they are very nice your first flying models!),...
LOL, right Franko I should try harder then.

::) I guess your Cinema4D file is a binary one. They are usually much much smaller then a text file format like OBJ or the TBGL M15 fileformat.

Unconventional I would say. Never saw something like this. Question: Are these bitmap textures or materials? Can you create a texture map from Cinema4D for the use in a game?
=> what is the 'max. size' format for objects should include in our game???
Ok, I will repeat myself. A good size would be 1000-2000 faces(quads).

hey mike, thank you! :) !
must laugh...
perhaps you can help me:
for U:
Question: Are these bitmap textures or materials? Can you create a texture map from Cinema4D for the use in a game?
- short Answer: materials and shaders...
- texture map for the game...? what format/file size or what do you need exactly?
1) I have export my cinema 'ufo' file to lightwave, then load the frankos-ufo.obj to hexagon1.2 ( I have an older version...) but haven't worked with it, sorry ;)
2) do me please a favour: - load my file (*.rar) I added above...
aa) "wόrfel" + bb) "torus" objects you can see... the object is very bis sized...
try this one, I have saved it as a hexagon1.2 file...
perhaps you can import this ufo-object for blender... (*.M15)... or this things...
- otherwise I do the directly way and build everything with textures in cinema 4d, it's very complicated to go the complicated way through 3 apps...
=> big question! If you or petr or somebody else programs such a scene like petr does it with his little ww1 models (file: "eindecker7.m15"), you must have this *.m15 files???
- the blue yellow ufo has only materials no bitmaps
- yes, perhaps I can create bitmaps..., must study the manual... ;)
see you and best thanks...
lionheart
PS: the object is crude, not really best formed and it's not synchron, it was only an experience ;)

Which format for the texturemap??? BMP.
I attached the M15 you wanted to have.

:D
thank you, michael, I will test your example:) but I am thinking my file of the ufo was too large?... I remove and build a lower poly object;)
and, of course, good luck for your models or programming projects ;)
...next time I go 'directly way' from OBJ file to blender and export it to M15... technology is often complicated where it should be easier...
good evening, run to the sun, Lionheart

Hi guys,
@LionHeart - interesting model, I sent you PM with link to OBJ 2 M15 tool. All support tools are listed here (http://psch.thinbasic.com/tools.html).
Regarding collision detection, we will have to do our own, but for air combat it should be not so difficult.
@Abraxas - there is some guy driving bike in the Java version :)

hi all:)
@hi petr, thanks a lot for the converter! I have used it some minutes before, it works fine!:) great work... I am astonished, what is possible with thinbasic... ! :D
- it's possible to test my "ufo1" ? only texture misses, sorry...
- I add it here as my first "m15 file", perhaps you can build it into your fokker script???
- or it's possible to use your ww1 concept script? ;)
- the new ufo.m15 size is 249 KB :) sounds better...
best regards, more will come...
bye, lionheart

Thanks for the link, I know that allready. They have a 2000 poly version of the Fokker Tri Plane. Not a bad job they did. But I like their 20.000 poly version. That things looks smooth.

Hi Lionhead,
906 polygons, very nice :)
It would be definitely possible to use it in WW1 demo, but I am thinking of different one, more Wipeoutish.
I will work on it during the weekend, as school started for me, so I sit there from morning to evening and come home dead :)
Regarding model size - we can ZIP each model, and use ThinBasic UNZIP$ to extract it just before loading.
@Abraxas - I like the way they did the water :)

So, if it stays 5-5 then I will make a new poll tommorow morning and you guys have to vote on that one. I will let it open for 2 days thne, is that ok? Or would be one day fine too?

2 days seem ok to me, more time for important final decision :)

dear mike, petr, all:)
I agree with it ...two days more for such an important decision? GOOD!
or we can create two games in the same time;)
my question how to 'bake' a texture to a *.OBJ file... hmh, I have never done it before...
perhaps somebody can help, would be nice...
my UFO object needs only a nice texture so it can fly through the night :) if I know the procedure of uv texture baking, I can create more models for the game... :D

Franko, I answer here and not to your PM.

Crazy :) No we simply can't. There is simply to much work for one.
my question how to 'bake' a texture to a *.OBJ file... hmh, I have never done it before...
Texture baking is a process where your favorite modeller tool (Like Cinema4D) will create a texture map from the materials/decals
during the render process. So if Cinema4D supports this, then you can use your shaders and create a texture map with it.
The other process to bind a texture to an modell is by laying out the UV-Corordinates in a tool (Modeller, specified tool, whatever),
create a texture with a painting program our other technics.
I would say that texturing a modell, is where the pros devide from the amateurs. :)
perhaps somebody can help, would be nice...
Sorry, I have not much experience with Silo that I can help you there. I would simply have to learn that first. I would look up some tutorials
about how to do this in Cinema4D. I know it is hard and time consuming work. I'm sure you can do it.
my UFO object needs only a nice texture so it can fly through the night
After the game decision is made, and once we know what has to be produced, we will decide who does what. So maybe we will decide
that one does the mdoels, the other the textures, etc.
