I started using VPC about 2 weeks ago and find it very interesting.

thanks for the heads up about the service pack.

better use vmware or parallels. http://www.vmware.com . https://www.vmware.com/download/desktop_virtualization.html . with some tricks you can use the vmware-player for free. on a mac these virtual maschines are essential to handle windows-files. i even do thinbasic programming only in the virtual maschine. you can even load readymade virtual-maschines (applyances) http://www.vmware.com/appliances/ mainly unix/linux, but even windows-server2003.
vmware and parallels have way more experience than microsoft in virtualizing software. (eg. optimizing 3d-graphics or devices like usb2. ) hmm vpc does not have usb at all, and parallels and vmware are competing about usb1.1 vs. usb2. whole different league. vmware and parallels even support directx9 and opengl.

Virtual PC if I remember when I tried it only allows windows based OS's.

VmWare gets my vote and with the appliances you can download really easy to use.

I have not tried Parallels, so can't comment on it or VirtualBox.
