Hi Eros,

let me know your impressions. I am not sure if I should go for it or not.

SP3 for XP messed up my computer. I had to do a system restore.

So make sure to make a restore point before trying to install it, that is all I can say about it.
I will wait a few more weeks before I attempt again.

Installed SP3 on a Virtualized XP and all went fine.
A little bit long because it makes a backup of all needed files but seems ok.

Hi,

Kent, that is bad :( Did you used Windows Update before?
I read somewhere, that SP3 is just cumulative pack of patches since SP2 to now, not sure how much that is true.

Thanks,
Petr

Petr that sounds right about what it is, as it is big.

Yes, I used Windows Update to get it and not automatic updates.

I will get it in the future, but will wait a couple of weeks. I am sure it will be good to have as SP2 has been.

Thanks Mike,

seems a lot of patches :)

Vulnerability in GDI could allow remote code execution

I wonder how :D It seems "remote code execution" is the most frequent problem fixed in SP3.
Did you installed SP3 yet?

Eros, I had it mess up my computer on the first install. So I went ahead and totally did a full restore of my HP from the restore dvd's.
I installed the newest nvidia drivers and just uninstalled from add remove programs the useless apps that come with the HP.

I then did all recommended updates and then it came to SP3 and again, it messed up my computer. I could never go into windows as it kept rebooting.
This time I booted into safe mode (pressing F8 repeatedly at boot up till the menu for windows boot options came up) and did a system restore.

I had not installed any apps, so my system was as clean as could be and had this problem.

I looked at a poll online somewhere and very few are having the problems that I am, so I don't know.

Yes, it seems your problem is reported in many forums. It seems related to some hardware configurations but not have further details.
All SP3 installations we did were on HP desktop computers, all Core 2 Duo with Intel graphic card on board.
So standard desktop computers with nothing onboard other than the things that come out from HP:

My HP is AMD X2 and Nvidia Graphics Card... at least good to know other HP's are doing well with it. I will try again in a few weeks.
