I've been trying to download files from the new thinbasic site and can't get anything to completely download.
I was wondering if anyone else is having trouble downloading or is it just me?
Thanks
Sandy
I've just managed to download the Preview version of thinBasic successfully. :)
But I did encounter the problem of downloads not completing on another Forum. It was tracked down to a problem with a Website script that counted the number of downloads.

I tried again to download the preview and could only get 27% of the file so there must be something wrong at my end. I wish I could figure out what it is.
Thanks

Sandy,
I fall into similar problems too in other web sites in the past and usually it was a cache problem. Please delete your browser cache and try again.
If you have Internet Explorer use menu Tools/Internet Options/ and than search for "Clear cache" or something like that.
If you have FireFox it should be a very similar path.
Let me know.

ErosOlmi, I tried clearing the cache and downloading again. I still can't get the preview to download completely. I'll keep searching for the problem.

Sandy,
which browser do you use ?
I tried in Firefox 2.0.0.6 and Internet Explorer 6.0, both without problem.
Thanks,

I've tried with both. I'll just have to keep looking until I find out what my problem is.

Sandy,
I've downloaded thinBasic from different computers in different networds with different internet connections but not found any problem so far. So, the following is a list of action I can think you can do in sequence in order to try to understand what is going on.
clear the cache again
when downloading, always use "Save to disk" and not directly open
de-activate temporarly any anti virus or anti-spyware. Try to download again. Then activate them again.
do not use any download manager
if you use IE, de-activate any toolbar like MSN toolbar or Google toolbar (they are a sort of spyware)
if possible, try to download thinBasic from a different computer and see if it makes any difference
what IE version do you have installed? If not IE7, possibly install IE7
apply all security Microsoft updates using Microsoft Update web site you can find in IE and menu Tools/Microsoft updates. Attention, if never done before, it can takes a lot of time and will install WGA

Hi Eros,
maybe this is weird idea, but for such a cases what about service "Mail with tasty attachement" ;)
In case of such a problematic situation it would be possible to request email from thinBASIC with thinBASIC STABLE or PREVIEW as attachement. This should solve client side issues with determined server ... or not ?
It could be handled by script.
Bye,

I still haven't figured out what my problem is with downloading the preview.
What's strange is that I downloaded the free pascal (a 32 MB file) without any trouble. I must admit I was surprised when it downloaded ok.
I'll keep trying to find my problem.
Thanks

@Sandy
I've done the following on the server that hosts thinBasic web site:
shut down web server and restarted (IIS6)
cleaned web site cache
deleted thinBasic preview version 1.4.0.1 ZIP file and re-uploaded
I'm now re-organizing the hard disk that contains web site plus all files
Can you please try again?
I'm sorry about that but if you already did my previous indications plus the action I've done now, the only thing it remain is to restart the server. I can do that but only after a last confirmation from you.
@Petr
You idea is nice and I will see how to do it.
In any case it worry me a bit due to the limitations of many mail server about total mail size and mostly about the possibility to receive connections from automatic software that will generate a lot of traffic and we do not have big band here but just 1024Kb. Thanks in any case for the suggestion.

@Sandy
I've added a new forum functionality to be able to download from forum.
Go to forum home page and look at right side under "Recent posts" there is a new block caled "Downloads" (available only to registered and logged in users).
Try to download from there and see if it works. Please let me know.

I tried both ways and still can't get a complete download. Both ways stop after 26%. Maybe I should wait for the next update and try again then.
I was wondering if anyone has the preview on their site and would let me try to download from there?
Thanks

I tried again to download the preview version and again got only 27% of the file.

Sandy,
I've no idea at the moment. Of course DialUp is much slower but should not make any difference.
Did you had the chance to try to download from a PC different from yours? Or from another netword connection?

That's what I thought but I wasn't completely sure.
Did you had the chance to try to download from a PC different from yours? Or from another netword connection?
I know only one person that I could ask to try the download but last week his machine was taken out by lightening and he doesn't know when he will be able to afford a new one.
I don't have another network connection at this time.
I'll keep trying to find a solution to my problem.
Thanks for all the help I've received.

I'm on dsl now and i still use Getright and have done for years, I know there are some arguments about spyware and tracking but if your line drops out least you can continue your download.
I've uploaded the preview to mediafire site I remember some else having problems downloading and this worked for them.

When I read that there was a new preview out I tried to download it. Same results as before. I still can't get a complete download. I've done everything I could think of to fix my problem. Also tried all the suggestions I received on the forum.
I've decided that I won't be able to get the preview and have quit trying. I haven't had any trouble with the 9-9 download so I'll just keep using that one.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help me.

Eros is there a way of doing a thin package. ie most of the files in the update are not changed (guessing) how about a smaller file with just the updated files or is that a pain in you know where.
ErosOlmi
24-09-2007, 19:37
I tried in the past to make "progressive" update but didnt' come to an end.
To build a release we have an automatic series of script and batch files that build all what is needed to create the final setup. Adding changes checks can be an idea but quite complex. Maybe project has reached a quite big size to consider something new about build and distibution. Complexity is due to the many parts the final application is build (modules and libraries).
Thanks a lot for the suggestion. It is something we have to think about.

Mike, Thank you for giving me the chance to try downloading the preview. I wasn't able to get a good download. I tried several times.
The only thing I have left to suspect is my internet service provider. After the first of October I'll get another provider to see if I can get the file. For about a week I've been thinking about switching my provider anyway. For the last 6 weeks I've been having trouble logging on and I now suspect that my provider is the problem.
After I find a new provider and check it out I'll know for sure.
Thanks

I've just bought a new domain that will be online in a week.
New hosting will be on a different server and will be dedicated to support users and other things.
Hope this will solve the problem.
If someone have problems downloading thinBasic files, I can send by mail, providing you mail can handle 6Mb (plus 1/3 due to Base64 encoding) attached files.
Remember I can give for free gmail accounts, just in case.

Don't know what happened. Since ever you changed the site. But to me it looks like it is sever related. Before I got allways around 80kbits donwload speed, which is not very much comparing to my webspace. And now I tinkering with 20kbit whne I try to download the newest previews. Generally the forum seems to be slower too. You said that in the beginning it was because of constant updates to the site. Is that still the fact?
ErosOlmi
04-10-2007, 18:41
I have to investigate with my provider. Effectively bandwidth seems slower than before.
I'm not making any massive updates in recent period. I see there are a lot of spiders on the web site and in forum but not so continuosly.
Anyhow, I've bought thinBasic.org domain hosted into another web server with different band. I will use it as mirror for downloads.
Thanks for the indications.
I will get back when more info.

Well,
good to know it now works. I'm still trying to understand the reason too.
I'm "discussing" >:( with my provider to see why a 50 USD a year web shared virtual hosted site (thinbasic.org) is working while a 1500 USD a year dedicated physical web server (thinbasic.com) not.
I will keep informed. All new future thinBasic versions will have a mirror where to download from.

Hi,
just for comparsion, from thinBASIC.com I get the preview version starting at 60 KB/s to 90KB/s ( I can grab files at 212KB/s at max ).
From thinbasic.org I have to wait till Firefox thinks its time :) ( some seconds ) and then download is very fast ( again just some seconds ).
What is better traffic tactics now - those who have not problems continue to download from tb.com and rest from tb.org, or all from tb.org ... ? :)
Thanks,

I prefer to remain into thinBasic "world" and not host files in other webs where they put ads or something like that. Opening a web space and a domain is very simple and took me just 5 mins, so no problem at all considering also the very low costs.
I can download from thinbasic.org at more than 250kbytes per seconds and it is in the same room where thinbasic.com is. So, same provider, same infrastructure. There must be some configuration to check or some items in the contract of the dedicated server I was not aware. Download speed from thinbasic.com was not so low in the past and no-one had problems downloading from there. Something has happened. I do not know what but I would like to understand. In next days I will apply all Microsoft updated to the OS in the server and see if something will change.
In any case now there is a mirror I will keep updated. I've created a menu here in the left part of the forum.

I noticed a very fast forum today and also tried to download from the main sever. Got a working zip file with the preview in around 90.9 kbit/sec . I think we are back to normal server speed here. :)
Just to try out the downloads... from the mirror site, I got the best ever by far downloading from thinBasic, average 200KB/sec
From the main server, 40KB/Sec which is on the low end of normal as usually it is between 60-70KB/sec.

Hey Sandy,
another stange things but, like the other time, we need to take into consideration.
I tryed to download bot from official and from mirror site and all went fine. Hope others can confirm it.
Regarding .part file it seems an interrupted download temp file or a file created by a download manager.
I will search some info on the web because I'm not aware of the error you reported. Maybe others know what that error is about.
Eros
ErosOlmi
22-10-2007, 07:00
Found something that reports a very close situation.
... try clearing the TEMP directory. The error indicates where the system TEMP directory is located, typically under C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\<username>\LOCAL SETTINGS\TEMP. Go to this folder and delete its contents.
If unable to see the folder in Windows Explorer, choose Tools>Folder Options. On the View tab, make sure the option to "Show hidden files and folders" is chosen and that "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. Once the TEMP directory has been emptied, reboot the computer and try to run the report again.
If errors are still received, try changing the location of the TEMP directory. To do this, right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop and choose Properties. An Advanced tab will display with an Environment Variables button. When choosing the Environment Variables button, it should display a dialog where the TEMP and TMP directories can be edited. Try editing these variables and pointing them somewhere simple, like C:\TEMP, where full read/write access is enabled. Once these changes are made, reboot the computer and try to perform the operation again.
But better to wait others to write their idea about this.

Another option can be the antivirus software intercepting the download and for some reason breaking it.
What AV do you use?

Downloaded fine here. The .PART extension really looks like some kind of download manager. Either by a Download Manager app or maybe you have a plugin for your browser thta takes care of that. I never saw something like this, but I avoid all these download managers so my thoughts are just guessing.
