A nice article talking about some bad past habits that ... sometimes return.
Be aware.

Well, who needs an IPod when there are other great devices out there. But I still like Apple way much better than MS.
I like a lot of things about Apple, but there are many things I don't care for and that article makes good points.
I thought our hope of being saved might be from Apple, if it ever released OS Tiger or whatever version it will be, to run on any PC.
But now there is a new ray of hope, Haiku, Beos is being carried on opensource and these guys have great plans. They will make a lot of the decisions for users that would probably be satisfactory, but still allow advanced users to dig into the system and customize it as linux can be now. I think a great idea. It is a lot faster than Linux, boot up time a matter of seconds. The same with launching appliations, almost instantaneous. Supporting all the new hardware is a top priority. I was so happy to run into this from the post Donald made on Jose's forum.
With the new low priced notebooks coming, sub $200, it will have to be an opensource OS to cut costs and if it does what the average user needs, it could be awesome!!

Haiku and Beos are sadly old hats. I bought Beos when it was sold by Be and it was a great OS. But since it is open source, nothing much is happening. If someone is complaining about how Linux is more soemthing for people who like to hack, then they should not look at Beos at all. The good thing about Beos is that you can port Linux apps like a snap. To bad it never really took off. The API for it was powerful but also very easy.
I liked Apple back in the good, old days of Apple II. As soon as I've seen that new Macs are not open systems I realized Apple is going sour... and I still think it's as bad if not worse than Microsoft. People don't realize that with every major (and not so major) change of the OS or hardware Apple forced them to basically re-purchase the software they've been using. Microsoft, on the other hand, has bent over backwards in an attempt to make Windows and the whole Wintel platform as backward compatible as possible. Just try to run one of the older Mac programs on modern Mac hardware and you'll quickly realize that it is a no go. Try the same on Windows and it is very likely that it will work. Heck! Even the old stone-age DOS programs are working. And let's not forget that Microsoft's OS's and PC applications, programs and games, are running on much broader hardware base than Mac stuff will ever run. So, give MS a credit where credit is due, and let's not forget that without MS most of us would probably be out of job. I don't have to like them (and I don't) but I respect them and I am thankful that I can earn my keep and have fun programming on MS's operating systems.
After all... thinBASIC is still in MS land... isn't it? So, let's not kill the hand that feeds us...
My 2 cents...

Mike check out the Haiku tech talk videos on google, it is not dead and it is coming to release candidate 1, which will be equal to and compatible to RC 5 of Beos. Then they have many more cool features planned for it.

Thanks for the hint, when I find time I'll check it.
