Ken seems quite expert on that and can give much more info.
I remember he suggested CamStudio. You can find it at http://www.camstudio.org/
Also install the Lossless Codec.

My knowledge stops here :-[

Personally I use Camtasia to record an avi file and than convert to wmv using Windows Movie Maker. My results are not so good in terms of size/quality balancing.

Eros nailed it right on the head with what you need. After you record using the lossless codec, you can encode with windows movie maker to a wmv file.

WMV is fine, but I found that if I record with camstudio using the lossless codec, I can record at 800x600. When you then encode down to wmv, you need to go with 640x480. Where as if you then encode using the xvid codec, you can use the 800x600 resolution, it makes the text on the screen recordable. So the steps I recommend:

1. Set your screen resolution prior to 800x 600 resolution.
2. Record your video using camstudio using the lossless codec from them.
3. Run Virtual Dub, another fine free tool. You can edit now and do lots of other things. But you can just as easy just encode it down.
4. Encode using Virtual Dub using the xvid codec with default settings. Set your audio to use the mp3 codec and encode to 800x600.

You will be very happy with the results.
