Hi guys,

it seems there is new engine out from Id Software. Hurray :)
This shows it running "just" on Mac, but it is clear it will be present on normal PCs, XBOX360, PS3 and Linux as well ... :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvuTtrkVtns

Video presents scene of some race, detailed environment and character, hard to guess anything specific from that, but it looks interesting ;)

One thing which scares me a bit is that, if my ear drivers are ok, Carmack says scene has 20GB of textures. So it must be smoothly streamed from HDD in some way, or it is so deadly bitmap2procedural stuff my head can't get it :) I read somewhere Id is planning to use texture of 128 000x128 000 resolution for this engine. I think some megacompression takes place here.

On other side, Quake Wars ( Id tech 4 ) mega texture occupies just 8MB of graphic memory at moment, did anybody found more than thousands time copied/pasted general info of this technology, or we have to wait for source release :) ?

Petr

What can I say, but oh my goodness, when can we do all of that in tbgl? :) :) :)

THank for the link Petr, you know I love seeing tech demos like that. Really inspiring!!

I knew it ;D
I can't promise anything kryton, just working on TBGL almost every day :)

Interesting is that Id Tech 5 is not ready for licensing at the time, so this is probably no yet final !

I wonder what the tie into the Macs will be? Maybe the day of the Mac as the main machine is coming when games will appear on it first instead of on windows?

Not sure Kryton, on the other hand until the advent of DirectX or OpenGL porting the Microsoft's OS and the hardware below, they were not just the better environment for the videogames development.
However we will be to see.

Hi,

kryton, please do not forget ( if my memory parity check is ok :) ) that Carmack presented Doom 3 technology also first on Macs in times of GeForce 3! And since then I think the situation didn't changed so radically.

I found article (http://www.barefeats.com/doom3.html) benchmarking Doom 3 on PCs and Macs, as you can see ( if we can trust this article ) apples lose even when equipped with ultra beast card like GF 6800. On other side, framerate is generally decent on all tested machines.

Mac has probably nice drivers for OpenGL, as this new Carmack cutting edge stuff runs on it as well as OGL verision of World of Warcraft and others...

Roberto, I never thought about Direct X running on a Mac, but with it being on the same chip now... oh wow, that would be something.

Petr, I never knew Doom3 was presented on a Mac. I wonder why he did that, even then?

All very interesting and adds to the mystery, but that demo is mind blowing. I was thinking of the detail in that scene, and then to go without any transition into a small part of the overall scene and into the rooms and to see a fully developed cinematic character, it is just beyond words how it can all be done!!

Hi,

why JC did it I don't know.
Maybe he can get some "donations" from Mac people, Id is still very small company.
... or it is simply "we do all OS" demonstration.

The exterior to interior smooth flow is my favorite moment in video! And it seems there will be more shown on this year E3, although maybe just for pre-registered visitors / just serious engine applicants.

Petr

More and more people will make the switch from Windows to the other 2 because of VISTA ( i will once my XP isn't supported anymore). Once the big comanies have engines, that let them easily port their games between the platforms, you will see the game also come out on apple and linux.

I agree, but you have forgotten the killer console LBOX (aka the Unix ops I wanted to say Linux XBOX clone).
