That is neat Matthew. Any idea how they do these. I saw one where Ryu from Street Fighter 2 fights Scorpion from Mortal Kombat in a really neat fight. Have no idea how they manage to make those.

The Sonic Animation appears to be a .gif Animation which you could make using the same kind of Programme you use for creating Animated Avatars but I think it was done using Flash and Saved as a .gif.

The Excellent 'Ryu vs Scorpion' Video is also done using Flash. :)

Wow! Brutal stuff, I used to play MK some years ago but I never managed to perform a fatality.

As already matthew said correctly...
In the beginning, there must be way to capture each individual picture (or frame) of game activity. I think a game screen recorder like Taksi (it's open source) could be used, to capture video. Then, with a good video editor you convert video into images.

(e.g. jpg). The hard part comes next, in order to edit each image, imagine like making a traditional cartoon.
After the editing is done, you can compress all images in a single animated GIF file with a Gif editing software (the same could be performed with the video editor).

Perhaps the ideal software usage to make these could be Photoshop and Premiere, I used both of them on a class about multimedia applications, when I were in high school. They are powerful applications, but too expensive.
The alternative open source choice is Gimp and (maybe) Blender. Blender has already a great video editor embedded (called sequence editor), but I'm not sure if conversion of video-to-images functionality is provided. Perhaps a plugin already exists for that.

I used to use 'The Gimp' but found 'Paint.net' a little easier to use. :D

I've also been trying to learn 'Blender' for a long time now but I haven't been able to do much with it.

Here is 'Ken vs Raiden'. :)

I see. I thought perhaps they were modding the code to substitute the model, skins and animations of the outside character. I guess either way it is a major job to do, frame by frame with a good paint or video editor, or modding the source to put in other models and animations.

It does make for very interesting videos that is for sure.

There are excellent starting videos for blender. I can't recommend these free videos enough to learn and use blender.
