How to securely restore an old email account that may have been compromised?

Greetings,

I have an old email account that I stopped using for years due to security concerns. I suspect that the account may have been exposed to malicious sites or data breaches in the past. I changed the password to a stronger one a few years ago, but I have not used the account since then. I would like to use the account again, as the address is very suitable for my needs. However, I am worried that the account may still be hacked or compromised in some way. What are the best practices to ensure the safety and privacy of my old email account? Can I simply log in and change the password again, or do I need to take additional steps to protect my account? I appreciate any advice or guidance from the experts. Thank you.
