after installing a trial software last year i have noticed that some files attached to its software stop to respond to double click. and when i checked the system Path variable in the environment variables i found that all the Path deleted and added only that trial. for my luck i have a text backup for that Path variable. so when you install experimental soft be carefull.
after that i discovered that there is a freeware "Rapid Environment Editor" http://www.rapidee.com/en/about can backup your env variables to a .reg files, so in emergencies you just double click those files to repair the Environment.

A virtual machine for testing software is a great option.
To easily create a virtual machine from your own current PC you can use Disk2vhd: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/ee656415.aspx
It is a great tool created from the genial mind of Mark Russinovich, do you remember sysinternals: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals

Than use Microsoft Virtual PC to run your virtual machine.
In there you can do all the "damages" you prefer.
