I do not like that behave too.
That area is a user module so it is not a native feature: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=235841&highlight=Statistics
For the moment we have to live with it.
I will check and see if I can ask developer about that.

Hi John,
I checked config and I discovered it was my config mistake.
Developer of the mod already developed the option to set to which post of the thread to link: "First", "Latest" or "First unread".
I just changed from "First" to "First unread".
