Thanks for asking for screenshots Petr and thanks for taking them Charles.
I can say that the free Dungeons and Dragons Online (DDO) is really a spectacular game. It is the first one I joined and I like it even more than my trial of World of Warcraft. Don't get me wrong WOW is really nice, but I think DDO is even better.
I like just walking around exploring and doing simple things, not a hardcore character builder, so for that DDO is great. I highly recommend it!
It is a big download, but it is free. I will place some screenshots too. You can develop 2 characters, play alone, with friends and or look for groups of other real players to make new friends.

Hi Kent,
Second Life is a large download too. About 90Megs, which gives some indication of just how complex it is to create an animated person with facial expression, physics and audio.
I am very interested in this aspect of Second Life and what impact it may have:

I have found it has its moments of instability - with paralysis or teleportation failures where one is cast sprawling into the void. SL is dependent on a large number of servers - one for each region of the virtual world plus servers for holding data on the Avatars and their assets. But I don't see this as a long term problem.

Seeing this thread about Second Life has brought back some memories. :D
Back in late 2006 on another forum someone told me about it & suggested I downloaded it. I did but sadly I couldn't do much as my computer was so slow & my graphics card was basically unsupported. If I remember correctly I seemed to spend most of my time at Orientation Island.
The attached image shows my avatar who looks absolutely nothing like me, lol. :p

Thanks for the screenshots!
It looks slightly odd on some, but the Roman temple is quite nice.

Matthew,
That is the same basic avatar that I am using :) The viewer has been finessed since your time though.
Petr,
Much of the oddness is due to lack of shadows. I think some kind of diffuse shadng on the ground and lower body would help without costing too much in processing. Most of the buildings I have seen so far only look good from the outside.

Sorry it took some time to get the shots. I had flushed out .net and c++ redistributables and DDO required .net 1.1 and redistributable 2005 c++.
Anyways got it all running again. Here is the link to my screenshots for the game.

If you decide to try the game. Join the "Thelanis" Server. This is the server for beginners as my friend told me. I have been very happy on there.
My character name is Oliviat Nine. I tried making numerous characters and finally ended up with her. Since you can walk in first person or in third person, usually I combat in 3rd person and explore in 1st person. Anyways, I found it more fun to watch a girl run around and hence the female character.
Let me know if you any of you try it out, will be glad to get in with you and just go around having fun. The game is spectacular looking as you will see. All of those are in game screenshots.

Thanks Kent,
Visually appealing and not a Dungeon in sight :)
Can users participate in building villages and landscape as well as characters?

Charles, no building or city designing in DDO. It is exploring, doing quests, solving mini puzzles and playing mini games that are part of the various vast levels. There are dungeons and things to fight, but it is fun and pretty easy to do.
