The human genome is about 3 billion Base pairs but only 1 percent of this encodes the 20000 human genes. A further 9 percent is thought to implement a control system. That leaves 90% Junk DNA! - useless fragments with no functionality. DNA is remarkably similar to a computer disk drive in this respect.
