Are squares A and B are the same color?

for my eyes no
but in reality it is the same color.
download vb colour picker from:
http://www.silvermaine.co.uk/downloads/vbcolourpicker.zip
then click the dropper and drag to the squares, you will see that they have the same value.
look here:

[font=courier new]I agree, A appears darker than B.

I think, the trick is that, in the shadow, all of the squares are darker. So, even in the shadow, the squares continue the alternation between dark and light. But, apparently, Adelson intentionally constructed the picture so that, the light squares in the shadow, are the same shade as (as dark as) the dark squares, which are not in the shadow. Maybe, the fact that the squares are all shades of gray, helps the illusion.

[font=courier new]I agree, from the picture, it seems impossible. :?

How many other things which seem obvious, are we completely wrong about? :(
