View Full Version : HTML5 WebGL Quake II
News story here (http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010/04/html5-and-webgl-bring-quake-to-the-browser.ars) about developers who have ported Quake II to run in Web browsers using HTML5 & WebGL.
There is a Website here (http://code.google.com/p/quake2-gwt-port/) on Google where the Source can be downloaded.

WebGL is very interesting standard,
when do you think it will become common in browsers, Matthew?
Petr
Probably when more games like Quake II get released. :comp8:

i tested WebGL in the past and it won't work with all OpenGL cards and the software emulation are to slow.
this is why i Develop http://Shiny3D.de
it's for IE, FireFox, Chrome, SeaMonkey Windows, Linux and Mac

I downloaded a nightly-build of Firefox from here (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/) & tried the WebGL examples on this (http://learningwebgl.com/blog/?page_id=1217) page.
They all worked, admittedly a little slowly because my graphics card doesn't support OpenGL 2.1 so I had to use the MESA software rendering library.

Hi Matthew,
I downloaded the linked nightly-build, enabled the WebGL support ... but still can't run any of the demos.
MESA could be the way, but I will wait till it works in hardware. I have OpenGL 3.3 capable card, so it should work nicely.
I will try other browsers during weekend.

P.S. Joshy, it looks interesting, but I like on WebGL it will (one day) work in browsers without need to download any kind of plugin. There is lot of plugins for 3D, I tried the O3D from Google, and tens of other engines. But the problem for me is that I have to install something to make it work. But 5points plus to you for making your plugin less HW hungry, I agree WebGL including requirement for shader support is very bold step.
