I have decided to try to learn about some elementary thinBasic commands by studying the replies to topics on the forum.
Please forgive me if this sounds stupid. I am so new at this that I haven't yet figured out how to thoroughly navigate the forum. I have been muddling around reading a lot (and I mean A LOT of prior posts by everyone. However, I have not been entirely successful in working with the forum posts. Once I have read a topic (or a reply to that topic) I would like to be able to hide it and not have to re-read it again.

I am amazed at how many posts are very, very recent. Don't you guys ever sleep?

Anyway, in reading the posted topics I see a darker blue line header (or footer) with the words 'mark as read'. Then I see on individual replies to a topic that been posted and that 'mark as read' header (or footer) line wording on the blue line has changed to 'mark as unread'.
I want to be able to hide those post replies that I have read, but maybe not to hide the entire topic.
I would like to know:
If I click on the 'mark as read' button on a topic will that somehow hide all of that topic from my view? If I click on the 'mark as unread' button on a reply to a topic will that somehow reveal only that reply? I am not sure just how to set up my activity on the forum. I want to be able to ask a question of you experts and be notified of a reply without having to read all of the topics that I have already seen.

How do I set up my forum account to show me only those new topics and replies that have not yet been read and to hide those older topics and replies that have already been read? I know it must be possible because of how soon some of you reply to posts.

Thank you very much for your help. I hope that I am not asking these questions at the improper forum. I will continue struggling as I try to learn more and more about thinBasic. Oh, and by the way, why was the language called 'thin'? It seems pretty powerful to me.

To quote a singer "I'll sleep when I'm dead", an insomnia helps.

Hi Richard,

maybe combination of "Mark as read" and using "Show unread posts since last visit" (near your avatar on the top side of site) could provide what you want?

If you seek for something in particular, the "Search" functionality can be of help.

No. Why? :P

Hi Rich.

Yes this forum is quite participated. Sometimes you can pass a whole week without any new post, sometimes you can have many posts in one single day. That's life :D

Anyway, forum cannot "hide" posts but can mark post as read (when you open it) or you can mark a post as "unread" when you (for example) what to leave a post you are interested as not read.
But there are some tricks.

In the upper part of the forum just under the "thinBasic" title there are 2 options: "Show unread posts since last visit (http://community.thinbasic.com/index.php?action=unread)" and "Show new replies to your posts (http://community.thinbasic.com/index.php?action=unreadreplies)"
If you cannot read them is because you have to expand the area (see little + - button in upper right area just under "Simple Machine forum" logo)
You can use that 2 functionalities to have just new or replied posts.
Also consider the "Mark ALL messages as read" button (at the right end of the forum lists just before "Info center" area) in order to have a first base line where to start.
you can use the "recent posts" you can find right or bottom of the forum
always check the little "new" image close to not read posts
visit this forum as much frequently as possible in order not to have too much posts ;)

Yes, isn't it? It starts to be quite reductive. But we like that way.
We used the word "thin" because we wanted it fast (in terms of execution and usage) and light (in terms of installation and running)
"thin" also compared to the multi hundred mega installations that we are all used recently.
"thin" like the "air"
"thin" because it is easy
...
maybe we need a new "marketing" strategy :read: :D
