Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Intel & their graphics cards according to this (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/bfefcfa0-e2d1-11de-b028-00144feab49a.html) news story.

I was going to say that if you specialize in one thing, you tend to do better. But, if the goal is to join CPUs and GPUs, maybe this is bad news for Intel. We'll have to wait and see.

That is sad news,

I was hoping for the first solid graphic solution from Intel.

I hope they will arrange some contract with ATi (Intel doesn't seem to be friend with Nvidia), to replace their "integrated graphic solutions" at least with decent ATis, the onboard Intel cards are something which wakes me up from sleeping with loud cry - till now no good OpenGL support, not so good Direct3D too, and if you could see what "magic" artifacts does latest Intel under Windows 7 in desktop rendering on university computers ... :(

I am sorry to see myself being so negative, but my last positive experience was Intel i740, which was at least decent in its time even for OpenGL programming, although Wiki talks about "disappointing performance", at least the gap between good cards and Intel ones was not so huge as it is now.

It seems to me they stopped around 1999, if their current models cannot render even 40 000 polygons in 2009, something is wrong.

It's strange that Intel don't seem to get on with Nvidia. :(

You'd have thought that if AMD brought ATI it would have made sense for Intel to buy Nvidia.

I almost forgot ATi is under AMD now. So yes, that makes Nvidia the possible choice (if they would like each other).
Or S3, but I am afraid that would not be big win (but who knows, did anyone tested S3 Chrome 5400E yet?).
